Vision

The owners had purchased this home after relocating from the city and were envisioning this home as a gathering place for hosting friends and family, with modern amenities, large open spaces, and capturing sweeping views of the lake.

Design

The owners key desires were to fix the front entry, increase ceiling height, and open the space. After a couple proposals, we proceeded on a contemporary vision of their Georgian style home. The front entry was raised for added height and grandeur, the guest bathroom and mudroom were re-arranged, and the main focal point of the home was a great room with 15 foot ceilings that opened into the kitchen and the brick fireplace remaining the focal point on one side, and a wide glass view of the lake on the other side.

Key Challenges

The main challenge was the altering of the engineered truss roof for increased ceiling height in the great room. The trusses were altered structurally so we could remove the half of the truss facing the lake. Now with half of the trusses hanging off a steel beam over the living room, our carpenters site framed the tall great room ceiling for maximum height. Having a designer with keen attention to structural detail, and a carpentry crew with the experience to handle changes on site were paramount to completing the great room as designed.
